- March 29, 2018: Our work on broadband absorption published in ACS Photonics titled “Coupling
of epsilon-near-zero mode to gap plasmon mode for wideband perfect light
absorption,” was highlighted by Nature Photonics, vol. 12, issue 4, 2018.
- January 18, 2018: Prof. Guo was elected to Fellow of of SPIE-The International Society for Optics and Photonics.
- January 5, 2018: Ziyi's paper titled "Quadrupole mode plasmon resonance enabled subwavelength metal-dielectric grating optical reflection filters" was published in Optics Express, vol. 26, issue 1, pp. 496-504 (2018).

- December 7, 2017: Prof. Zhiwen Liu from the Penn State University gave a SPIE travel lecture on mobile phone based optical spectroscopy at UAH.
- December 1, 2017: Hong Guo received the Iliana Martin Chittur Outstanding Graduate Student Award of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
- September 27, 2017: "Nanoplasmonics for Biosensing and Enhanced Light-Matter Interaction," a special issue of Journal of Nanophotonics, edited by Prof. Guo, was published.
- August 8, 2017: Ziyi Wang presented a talk on his work in the 2017 SPIE Optics and Photonics Annual Meeting in San Diego, California.
- July 21, 2017: Jinnan Chen received the Alabama Graduate Research Scholarship award among five Ph.D. students at UAH.
- July 15, 2017: Wuxing Zhang received a MS degree in Electrical Engineering. The topic of his thesis is transparent THz electrodes using structured gold films.
- June 18, 2017: Journal of Photonics Research, which Prof. Guo serves as an Associate Editor, achieved an impact factor of 4.679.
- May 31, 2017: Ph.D. student Hong Guo received a prestigious Optics and Photonics Educational Scholarship Award from SPIE-The International Society for Optics and Photonics.
- May 30, 2017: Prof. Guo received the Individual Investigator Distinguished Research (IIDR) award of UAH. He was among seven faculty members who received this award in 2017.
- May 22-25, 2017: Prof.
Guo organized and chaired a session in the 38th Progress in Electromagnetics Research Symposium
(PIERS) Conference in St. Petersburg, Russia. He also visited Moscow after the meeting.
- May 17-19, 2017: Prof.
Guo served as a judge for the 2017 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Los Angeles, California.

- September 19, 2016: Wonkyu’s paper, “Localized and nonlocalized plasmon resonance enhanced light absorption in metal-insulator-metal nanostructures," was among the Top Downloaded Articles on Plasmonics and Metamaterials published in Journal of the Optical Society of America B and Optics Letters over the last year.
- August 8-11, 2016: Prof. Guo organized and chaired a session on ultra-thin nano-structured surfaces in the 37th Progress in Electromagnetics Research Symposium (PIERS) in Shanghai, China. He also served as a co-chair of the best student paper award session for optics and photonics in the conference.

- August 2, 2016: Prof. Guo was granted a U.S. patent (U.S. Patent no. 9,404,861) on integrated surface plasmon spectroscopy and sensing.
- August 1, 2016: Jinnan Chen and Sadra Mirshafieyan received the prestigious Alabama Graduate Research Scholarship among six Ph.D. students at UAH.
- June 20, 2016: Prof. Guo was appointed as an Associate Editor of the SPIE Journal of Nanophotonics.

- November 20, 2015: Wonkyu’s paper, “Localized and nonlocalized plasmon resonance enhanced light absorption in metal-insulator-metal nanostructures," published earlier this year, was among the most downloaded articles of Journal of the Optical Society of America B in consecutive three months.
- October 25, 2015: Xueli and Hong's paper, “Super-period gold nanodisk grating for surface plasmon resonance spectrometer biosensor,” was published in Applied Spectroscopy vol. 69, pp. 1182-1189 (2015).
- October 18-22, 2015: Wonkyu received an OSA Graduate Student Leadership Travel Grant to attend the OSA Frontiers in Optics Annual Conference in San Jose, California. He also presented a paper in the meeting.
- October 21, 2015: Prof. Guo was invited to have a dinner meeting with his former students and alumni of UAH working in the silicon valley. He was very impressed and pleased by the roles of his former students in the photonic industry in silicon valley.
- October 18, 2015: Prof. Guo was interviewed by OSA during the OSA Frontiers in Optics Annual Conference in San Jose, California for celebration of the OSA centennial.

- July 12-15, 2015: Prof. Guo attended the 7th International Conference on Information Optics and Photonics (CIOP) in Nanjing, China. He presented a paper and chaired a session in the conference.
- July 6-9, 2015: Prof. Guo attended the Progress in Electromagnetics Research Symposium (PIERS) conference in Prague, Czech Republic. He organized and chaired a session on ultra-thin structure plasmonic photonics and presented three papers in the PIERS conference.

- January 9, 2015: Sadra's paper on silicon color filters was highlighted in the January issue of Laser Focus World Magazine. Laser Focus World Magazine is a popular optical and photonics technology magazine that reports new technologies with significant potential impact.
- December 18, 2014: Boyang’s thesis work on metasurface anti-reflective coating was published in Applied Physics Letters, vol.105, issue 24, p. 241113 (2014).
- December 17, 2014: Prof. Guo visited Prof. David Brady at Duke University and also visited Prof. Wei You at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
- December 12, 2014: Sadra Mirshafieyan’s work on silicon color filters was published in Optics Express, vol. 22, issue 25, 31545-31554 (2014). Laser Focus World Magazine approached immediately to highlight the work in January’s issue.
- December 8, 2014: Hong Guo’s work on hybrid plasmon photonics spectrometer sensor was published online in Optics Letters.
- December 1, 2014: Prof. Yunlong Sheng of University of Laval gave an invited SPIE travel lecture at UAH. The SPIE Student Chapter hosted Prof. Sheng's visit.
- November 21, 2014: Prof. Elliott Brown, Ohio State Scholar Endowed Chair Professor, gave a Faculty Senator Distinguished Lecture at UAH on terahertz device technologies upon the invitation of Dr. Guo.
- November 6, 2014: The OSA’s Board of Editors approved the nomination of Dr. Guo to serve as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Photonics Research.
- October 30, 2014: Prof. Guo was invited to serve in the proposal review committee for the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) of the US Department of Energy.
- October 28, 2014: Prof. Guo was invited to serve in a two-day NSF program review panel. He took a tour of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial after the NSF panel.
- October 23, 2014: Hong Guo presented a talk on diabolo optical antennas in the OSA Annual Meeting in Tucson, Arizona. Prof. Guo attended the meeting and met with Prof. Robert Magnusson and Prof. Thomas Gaylord.
- August 21, 2014: Wonkyu Kim received a student travel grant from the SPIE and attended the SPIE Optics and Photonics Annual Conference in San Diego, California. He presented his work on plasmonic gap-mode resonance absorbers in the conference.
- August 17, 2014: Prof. Guo gave an invited talk on integrated surface plasmon resonance spectrometer biosensors in the SPIE Optics and Photonics Conference in San Diego, California.
- July 18, 2014: A party was held to celebrate Boyang's graduation. Boyang was hired to work for OmniVision Technologies in California.
- July 17, 2014: Former American astronaut, Dr. Jan Davis, visited our lab.
- June 16-20, 2014: Prof. Guo and his graduate students, Hong Guo, Wonkyu Kim, Sadra Mirshafieyan, and Xueli Tian, hosted the NSF Nano-optics Outreach Summer Camp for K-12 students at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
- May 23, 2014: Prof. Guo presented a talk in the 5th International Conference on Metamaterials, Photonic Crystals, and Plasmonics held at Nanyang Technological University Singapore. He also visited a research group of Prof. George Barbastathis at the National University of Singapore.
- April 25, 2014: Prof. Qing H. Liu from Duke University gave a Faculty Senator Distinguished Lecture on multi-scale computational electromagnetics at UAH upon the invitation of Prof. Guo.
- April 11, 2014: Dr. Ting S. Luk from the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) of the US Department of Energy gave a Faculty Senator Distinguished Lecture at UAH upon the invitation of Prof. Guo.
- February 28, 2014: Dr. H. Philip Stahl, President of the SPIE, gave an invited lecture to the SPIE and OSA Student Chapters at UAH. After the lecture, Dr. Stahl had a tour of our lab and had good conversations with students.
